Adenan sworn in as Chief Minister as BN record landslide victory

KUCHING: Tan Sri Adenan Satem was sworn in as Sarawak chief minister tonight after BN secured a 72-seat majority in the 82-strong state assembly in the 11th Sarawak state election. He was sworn in tonight at the Astana Negeri before Sarawak yang Di-Pertua Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud.

 

The election marked a successful outing for the ruling coalition, with PBB as its backbone securing a 100 per cent win out of the 40 seats it contested. SUPP also made a comeback, having wrested several seats from DAP, which it had lost in the 2011 state election. DAP failed to defend all 12 seats it won in 2011, retaining only seven seats. PKR meanwhile maintained the three seats it won previously.

 

Pas had a dismal outing, losing all 11 seats it contested. Pas’ splinter party Amanah also fared abysmally, failing to win any of the 11 in its maiden foray in an election. Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem won his Tanjong Datu seat, defeating Jazolkipli Numan of PKR. Adenan obtaining 6,360 votes, obtaining a 5,892 vote-majority over Jazolkipli’s 468. BN also secured several wins in several Chinese-majority seats including Batu Kitang, where DAP and PKR had squared off.

 

Even before the election started, BN already grabbed two (Bukit Kota and Bukit Sari in the Limbang division) of the 82 seats that were contested. BN has secured many of the hot seats it contested, and led throughout the election. SUPP president Senator Dr Sim Kui Hian won the hotly-contested Batu Kawah seat from DAP after defeating incumbent Christina Chiew Wang See and independent candidate Liu Thian Leong. He secured 6,414 votes to win by a majority of 2,085 votes. Chiew meanwhile received 4,329 votes while Liu, 1109 votes.
